A Humble Background Shapes a Resilient Attorney

Mark's journey to becoming a top-notch trial lawyer was not always an easy one. He grew up in a trailer park along a King Ranch fence line in Kingsville, Texas. Raised by a hard-working Licensed Vocational Nurse and a disabled Vietnam veteran, Mark learned the importance of humility, hard work, and perseverance. These values laid the foundation for his future success.

A Record of Achievements and Building Experience

Mark's passion for justice led him to serve in the U.S. Army as an infantry platoon leader after graduating first in his class from Officer Candidate School. Following his military service, he earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average at Texas A&M University in Kingsville. Mark's academic excellence granted him a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. In 1996, Mark earned his Masters in Public Policy and was awarded a scholarship to Harvard Law School.

During his time at Harvard, Mark distinguished himself as a "statistical expert witness" whose expert opinions were recognized by the court in the case of G.I. Forum v. Texas Education Agency. His analytical skills were instrumental in proving the disparate impact of Texas's high school graduation exam on ethnic minorities. He earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1999 and began building his impressive legal career.

A Commitment to Serving Others

Following law school, Mark served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Hayden W. Head, Jr., United States District Court, Southern District of Texas, Corpus Christi. During this time, he had the opportunity to represent a family member pro bono in a negligence case. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Mark secured a unanimous verdict of no liability, demonstrating his exceptional advocacy skills even in challenging situations. Winning this seemingly impossible case laid the groundwork for his future of tackling challenging matters in court.

Mark's dedication to his clients and pursuit of justice led him to become  a partner at Jackson Walker LLP, a corporate defense firm, and then a partner at the predecessor to Guerra LLP. His national practice has taken him to courts across the United States, including Manhattan, New York, and San Diego, California. Mark has also acted as lead litigation counsel before specialized courts such as the United States International Trade Commission.
